You and I, horizontal: Anthony McCall | SOLO SHOW

About

Anthony McCall was born in 1946 in England, and lives and works in New York. He entered the art and avant-garde film world in 1972 with a series of 'solid light' films (Line Describing a Cone, Conical Solid, Partial Cone, Cone of Variable Volume, Four Projected Movements, Long Film for four Projectors and Long Film for Ambient Light ).

Having made his mark throughout the 70's he withdrew from making art, returning only four years ago. Since then he has produced another body of strong and original work. His return coincided with the movement of cinema into art galleries and museums as well as the art world's rediscovery of his inaugural work.

Working in real time and real three-dimensional space, these films presuppose an active, participating spectator : a haze introduced into the gallery space produces a dynamic sculptural object of projected light which asks to be explored. The cinematographic experience is no longer found in the projected image - dependent on the screen or an auditorium - it has become the projection itself.

This solo show presents a new installation, « You and I, Horizontal » shown for the very first time. The work is accompanied by a suite of 12 drawings representing each sequence of the film. Two historical pieces, « Landscape for Fire » and « Miniature in Black and White » are also on view.
